Start a New Podcast Series#
So you want to start a podcast? Here's how you start!
Get Approval for a New Podcast Series#
The podcaster should#
- Complete one year of employment with Public Library and/or Metro.
- Get permission from your manager to add podcasting to duties.
- If your manager is okay with you spending work time on a podcast, please fill out the New Podcast Application to get started. You'll need to login with your library card to access the form.
When you submit the application form, it will be sent to three departments: production services, shared systems, and marketing and communications. Someone will reach out to you to discuss next steps.
Complete PRE-Launch Work#
Podcaster#
- Record a teaser episode (1-3 mins long). This will serve as your first post and will be used to set up the xml feed.
- Record your first few episodes.
- Contact MarCom about a logo, marketing plan, and launch date.
a. Arrange for MarCom to create a logo that adheres to podcast image requirements.
b. Set a launch date and communicate to everyone. - Fill out the Podcast Series Information Form. You'll need to login with your library card to access the form.
- Contact Web Services to set up a training session on how to post episodes to the NPL website.
Production Services#
- Record episodes with podcaster and edit files.
- Upload files to designated SharePoint folder.
MarComm#
- Create a logo. Upload the logo somewhere?
Shared Systems#
We must have the logo, information sheet, and teaser episode in order to complete our set-up steps.
- Add the podcast taxonomy term to the website (must have logo). Publish.
- Add the teaser episode to the website (must have logo and audio file). Publish.
- Publish the XML feed on podcast service platforms (Apple Podcasts, etc.). See step-by-step instructions.
- Check the validity of XML feed. Make sure the latest episode is in iTunes, etc.
- Train the podcaster how to load episodes to the website.

- Spot check audio files. If metadata isn’t done right, email A/V.
- Check Google Analytics to make sure everything is tagged correctly and data is being collected.
